February 17th

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day!  Our Valentine's party went very well.  The students really enjoyed the strawberry shortcake and whip cream!

IN writing, we have been focusing on rereading our own writing to make sure that it is readable for our writing partners.  After the student has read their own writing, they will meet with their writing partner.  The writing partner will read the story as the writer reads along.  Together they will make any corrections that they need to make.  We will continue to do this process whenever we fancy up a piece of writing!

Math:  We finished up unit 7, which was mainly about collecting data and then analysing the data.  The students really enjoy activities like these because it is hands on and it is something that they will eventually use in the real world.

Reading:  We have been learning what a topic, main idea and details are.  This week we have continued to review compound words.
We have also learned about irregular nouns such as child -->children, tooth-->teeth.  This is sometimes hard to remember, but this will help student with speaking as well as spelling.

Have a great weekend!

Our unit in writing really focuses on making your writing readable!  These second graders have been working so hard!  It seems like an easy concept to make your writing readable, but you would be surprised how much effort has to go into it.  We have to think about the spacing of our words, end marks, capital letters,  and making sure our stories make sense with a beginning , middle, and an end!  So I will be sending home some older pieces of writing that are rough drafts to make room for other future pieces of writing.

After the last math test, I realized I needed to go back and focus on some important ideas that were not mastered; telling time and addition and subtraction.  We worked on telling time at the o'clock, 1/2 hour, quarter hour and every 5 minutes.  Many students have still not mastered time.  Keep up with the practice at home!  Next week we will be moving on to Unit 7 in our Math Journal 2.  This unit really dips into measurement.

The students have gotten new jobs while they are reading.  They are now detectives.  They are always looking for clues to figure out something about the character.  The story will not tell us these things directly.  This will help us understand the story even better!

Yesterday, we had an awesome assembly.  The Red Wings school program came and encouraged us to stay in school and stay dedicated, so we can grow up and become whatever we want!  The teachers were shooting against the students!  It was a fun time!  All the students got pretty cool folders.

A note is going home about Our Valentine's Day party.  It will be Tuesday February 14th in the afternoon.  We will hand out our valentines and enjoy strawberry shortcake.  We will play a fun game and possibly a craft.   They deserve this party with all there hard work!

Have a wonderful weekend!
